The last thing those councillors and myself would want to do is provide a lesser service to our wonderful seniors.
The City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder is always looking at ways to encourage people to retire here, and that includes a vibrant senior’s centre in Roberts Street.
The change to have Amana Living take over the Meals on Wheels and other Commonwealth Home Support Program services such as transport, domestic assistance, and social support were really forced on us by changes coming out of Canberra that left the City with no alternative.
These changes, based on the same principle that has seen the NDIS scheme result in huge changes to oranigsation such as GIFSA.
In hindsight, Council could have engaged the community a bit earlier, once the contract was let to stop misinformation and rumours from spreading on social media networks. That was the aim of the recent public meeting – to fullty inform our seniors.
At that meeting, I gave assurances that the City would make sure that there are no services currently conducted at the Community Centre that would be reduced or cut. I remain firmly of the opinion that we will make sure that services to seniors will remain the same, or if anything, improved.
In coming months, my door will always be open to anyone who has a suggestion or idea that could benefit the lifestyle of our seniors.
This week, the senior management of Amana Living visited the City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder, and the Council had some good discussions with them. I am confident that the contract entered into by Amana and the Federal Government, will be met, and Amana expressed these same sentiments.
Bearing this in mind, Council, as representatives of the community, will be keeping a watching brief to ensure that services that have been promised are provided and maintained at a high standard.
