The Goldfields War Museum was established in 1989 to showcase the Goldfields community contribution to conflicts in which Australia has been involved, and was realised through the vision, drive and dedication of local resident Ross Rogers and his family. In April 2010, the museum was devastated by a 5.0 magnitude earthquake, the highest ever recorded in the area. The Goldfields War Museum relocated to the Kalgoorlie Town Hall with a long term commitment from the City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder to redevelop the museum and return it to Boulder.
This commitment began with the completion of a business plan and a significance assessment on the collection, with interpretation plans and a partial fitout contribution made possible by Lotterywest.
The Project was then first tendered in 2014 with SIA Architects and its associated consultants 3D Projects Pty Ltd, Tamram Pty Ltd Quantity Surveyors and Wood & Grieve Engineers Pty Ltd authoring, designing and documenting the Project.
Following significant assessments, the Project requirements were re-scoped and retendered in 2017. Firm Construction were awarded the building contract for the restoration works and Public were awarded the fitout contract for the Project.
Many other companies, contractors, RSLs, staff and volunteers were influential in bringing the Project to life.
On 7 January 2019, the museum was reopened in the Boulder Town Hall. Walk through the exhibition and discover the significant involvement residents of the town made during the Boer War, World Wars I and II, through to the 21st Century. Examine photographs, documents and original artefacts to gain an in-depth understanding of the wars and how it impacted those enlisted and on the home-front.
Housing a vast collection of war memorabilia from citizens of the Goldfields, you can explore the personal stories of these brave servicemen and women. A visit to the Goldfields War Museum will be an enriching experience for anyone with an interest in Australia’s history and warfare.
