Today marks a profoundly sad day for our region. The City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder is disappointed by BHP's announcement regarding the closure of its Nickel West Operations in Western Australia.
This decision is devastating, with significant impacts on the livelihoods of our residents and businesses, which will have far-reaching effects across the Goldfields.
Our thoughts are with all residents and families directly and indirectly affected by this news. The City is committed to continuing to work collaboratively with BHP to mitigate the impact on our local community.
While we currently don’t have all the details of what the future holds during this transition, the City will meet with BHP on Monday at a briefing with Council.
We acknowledge BHP’s efforts to support workers with alternative employment opportunities and the establishment of a community fund. Nevertheless, the City anticipates further discussions on the specifics of local support and how we can collectively ensure a stable residential workforce in Kalgoorlie-Boulder.
We understand that business decisions must be made, but the real-life implications of this closure underscore the critical need for collaboration with stakeholders and all levels of government to ensure our region remains supported by mining operations after any closure.
The City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder will continue to passionately advocate on behalf of our community and residents now and in the future.
