Teeing off the 2023 PGA WA Championship, the City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder has announced its first Kalgoorlie Golf Course brand ambassador, Connor Fewkes.
Currently ranked #325 in the world of amateur golf, Mr Fewkes has travelled all over the world to compete in tournaments, making his mark in the golfing world.
Highlights of his career include tying for 6th place in the Porter Cup in the USA in 2022 and tying for 5th place in the South Australian Classic earlier this year.
Mr Fewkes will play in his hometown this week in the PGA WA Championship for his fifth time, kitted with his City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder gear.
City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder CEO, Andrew Brien expressed the City’s excitement to support Mr Fewkes as a homegrown talent, whilst showcasing the Kalgoorlie Golf Course across Australia and beyond.
“It’s exciting to bring Connor onboard as our first brand ambassador while highlighting Kalgoorlie-Boulder as a premier golfing destination.”
“Connor is not only well-known for his golfing talent but has also been an employee at the Kalgoorlie Golf Course since 2016, working across all areas including the Waterhole Bar and Bistro, pro-shop, and as part of our grounds crew.”
“His exceptional talent has been nurtured locally from a young age and is a testament that our city is not all about mining.”
“We can be proud of the fact that we have professional athletes that have honed their skills right here in our city and have gone on to excel on a global scale.”
Mr Brien also spoke of how this ambassadorship will raise awareness of the Kalgoorlie Golf Course and its benefits for our local economy and tourism.
“Our golf course sees thousands of visitors per year, and these visitors need places to stay, places to eat, and things to do whilst here.”
“This year's Ladies Open brought 220 women to Kalgoorlie-Boulder, who outside of playing at the course went out for meals, visited our tourist attractions, and shopped at our local businesses,” he said.
As a Kalgoorlie native, Mr Fewkes began playing golf at the age of ten, although he recalls swinging a club even earlier, with his father who was the first captain of the Goldfields Golf Club following the amalgamation of Boulder, Hannans, and Kalgoorlie Golf Clubs.
Mr Fewkes attributes the ignition of his passion for the sport to his parents who both still actively play and recalls golf being an activity they did together.
“Golf is something you can do as a family, whether you go out and play or go to the driving range it’s something that every age can enjoy.”
“I’m excited to become a brand ambassador for the City and the Kalgoorlie Golf Course and am proud of our city and what it has to offer this sport in Western Australia and the country.”
“In the past, I have considered moving to further my career, however, I’ve been advised by mentors, coaches, and professional players not to, because I have one of the best ranges in the country right at my doorstep.”
“Regular players and general members of our community can access this high-quality course readily, which is not the case at other prestigious courses across Australia where availability and public access is limited.”
Mr Fewkes will be playing in this week’s 2023 PGA WA Championship, which is free to spectate and includes a family day event from 11am – 4pm on Saturday 14 October.
The Kalgoorlie Golf Course is open Monday to Sunday 7am – 5pm, public bookings are available by calling the pro-shop on 9026 2626 or by email to pro.shop@ckb.wa.gov.au
