Independent Odour Assessment Underway as City Engages Specialist

In response to community feedback, the City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder has appointed an independent odour specialist to conduct a thorough study and assessment of reported odour issues affecting various areas across the city.

As part of this assessment, a community meeting will be held on Monday, 21 October at Boulder Town Hall, providing residents impacted by the odour an opportunity to meet the specialist, learn more about the study, and share their experiences. This session will also explain how community members can assist by contributing real-time information throughout the study period.

Mayor Glenn Wilson encouraged all residents affected by odour to attend, even if they have previously shared feedback with the City.

“We have been collaborating closely with the Department of Water and Environmental Regulation to investigate this issue, and we are taking proactive steps to identify the source or sources of these odours,” said Mayor Wilson.

“The City is committed to ensuring that no one should feel constrained within in their home due to persistent odours, which is why we’ve engaged an independent specialist to conduct a comprehensive assessment and bring these findings to Council.”

Mayor Wilson also addressed assumptions regarding the odour’s source: “While many believe the smell is coming from the City’s Wastewater Treatment Plant, the facility has consistently met all regulatory standards, and we monitor it closely to ensure ongoing compliance. With many possible contributors to this issue, it’s important to investigate all potential sources in order to resolve this matter effectively.”

The community’s input will play a key role in supporting the specialist’s efforts to accurately identify the cause of the odour and recommend effective solutions. Findings and recommendations from the specialist will be presented to Council at a later date.

The community meeting will take place at 5pm Monday, 21 October at Boulder Town Hall. Residents are encouraged to pre-register on the City’s website. Those unable to attend can still provide feedback by contacting the City’s Environmental Health Team at 9021 9600 or by emailing mailbag@ckb.wa.gov.au

Further details about the meeting and registration are available on the City’s website.
