The City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder's investment in cutting-edge footpath analysis technology is already yielding significant results, with major repair and renewal works underway across the city.
As part of this year’s budget, the City introduced a new ‘postie'-style trike to streamline the process of identifying and addressing defects in roads and footpaths. Equipped with advanced machine-learning capabilities, the trike automatically detects issues such as potholes, cracks, vegetation overgrowth, and signage obstructions, minimising the need for manual inspections.
The trike captures images of road and pathway assets every few metres, with real-time data analysis allowing the City to efficiently compile a comprehensive list of defects, including precise locations. This technology reduces the time required to identify and repair damages, delivering more efficient and cost-effective outcomes for residents.
Mayor Glenn Wilson emphasised that the $18,000 investment is a key step forward in maintaining the City’s infrastructure and ensuring accessibility for all.
“The trike is a game changer for the City, allowing us to significantly enhance the speed and accuracy of identifying footpath and road issues. It supports our goal of creating more accessible footpaths for all,” Mayor Wilson said.
“We’ve listened to the community, and we’re working diligently to keep our infrastructure in peak condition by carrying out timely and efficient repairs.”
This latest investment builds on the City’s mobility mapping project from last year, during which a wheelchair pilot team from Briometrix completed a detailed assessment of local footpaths. The resulting ‘Effort Map’ identified hazards, repairs, and maintenance needs, directly assisting the City’s Engineering department in planning civil works.
“With the new trike, we’re confident we can enhance the quality of our footpaths and create a more pleasant experience for residents and visitors alike,” added Mayor Wilson.
