Kalgoorlie-Boulder Trading Hours Survey

Published on Tuesday, 2 July 2024 at 9:48:51 AM

Kalgoorlie-Boulder businesses and residents are being encouraged to take part in a community survey that will gather feedback on whether the City’s retail trading hours should change or stay as they are.

Trading hours are set under the Retail Trading Hours Act 1987, but the City currently has an approved variation from the Minister of Commerce for extended Sunday hours. This means general retail shops in Kalgoorlie-Boulder (with 25 employees or more) can trade on Sundays and public holidays (except Christmas Day and Good Friday) between 8am and 3pm.

Trading hours on other days of the week are 7am to 7pm Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday; 7am to 9pm on Thursdays, and 7am to 6pm on Saturdays. (Retailers can decide their own hours within these approved time spans).

Due to the success of the expanded Sunday trading hours, and as part of its economic development work to activate the City’s CBD, the City is considering whether trading hours should be further amended to provide more flexibility for retailers and customers, ultimately lifting local spending.

“We’ve received great feedback from businesses and residents about the extended Sunday hours, and want to find out from our community whether these trading hours should be maintained or further amended,” Mayor Glenn Wilson said.

“Across regional WA a number of areas have no restrictions on trading hours whatsoever. Should we do this in Kalgoorlie-Boulder? Should our trading hours be more consistent? We need businesses and residents to tell us their views.”

Mayor Wilson said the survey would feed into the City’s economic development work.

“We have a huge focus on activating our CBD and further lifting local spend. This is already high – 74 cents of every dollar stays in Kalgoorlie-Boulder – and shows that, when given the opportunity, locals do spend here. It would be great to think that local spend would lift even higher by keeping people in our CBD for longer through extended opening hours.”

The survey can be found at https://info.ckb.wa.gov.au/4cgIssq and closes on 16 July 2024.
