The new Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder, Andrew Brien, has served his first week in the position.
In some states the title isn’t CEO it is City Manager, which more accurately reflects the importance of the job and what it entails.
The CEO doesn’t only administer the workforce of the City of about 400 people and its $100m plus budget, but liaises with Federal and State Governments, private industry and most importantly you, the ratepayers of Kalgoorlie-Boulder.
Therefore, appointing the CEO is the most important task of a local government council and I can assure the ratepayers we took our duty seriously with a meticulous and prolonged recruitment process.
We received 24 applications for the job and when I saw Andrew Brien’s name on the list I knew we would be getting a quality CEO, because if he didn’t get the nod, then the successful candidate must be exceptional.
Andrew worked his way up the local government ladder from the very bottom in his home state of Queensland until he headed a large council.
He then came west to be the CEO of Bunbury and then more recently Bayswater. Like Kalgoorlie-Boulder, both councils are level one so I asked him why he wanted to come here and was pleased to hear that he was after the challenges and opportunities a council like ours offered.
I believe that shows that our work to be pro-mining, pro-development and with a vision to expand our population makes Kalgoorlie-Boulder an attractive destination.
Better still, Andrew and his wife Denise love camping in the bush and already have an affinity for our amazing Great Western Woodlands. And to cap that off more recently they have caught the gold detecting bug, so what better place to be than here in the heart of the woodlands and the center of Australia’s gold industry.
Over the coming weeks Andrew will be meeting many of you; talking to leaders of the many community groups and clubs to find out how we can work together to make Kalgoorlie-Boulder an even better place to live.
I’m confident you will give him a typical warm Goldfields welcome.
