The City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder is hosting a free celebratory barbeque lunch commemorating 30 years of Shed’s, at the C.Y O’Connor Men’s Shed on September 4, 2023.

First opening its doors in 2010, the C.Y O’Connor Men’s Shed has been a place for people to socialise, learn a new skill and find comfort in being part of a safe and welcoming community.

Since its inception, the City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder has remained one of few local governments in Australia that provide support to the Men’s Shed, including funding the employment of a full-time Shed Officer, as well as additional funding for services and workshops.

The Australian Men’s Shed Association, the national body of 1,297 community sheds across Australia is leading this year’s 30 Years of Sheds celebration, honouring a long history of tinkering, talking, and teamwork, as well as the first Australian community shed that opened in February 1993 in Goolwa, South Australia.

Today, the Men’s Shed movement hosts over 2,500 Sheds across 12 countries.

City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder Mayor, John Bowler said the City’s planned event will highlight the importance of the C.Y O’Connor Men’s Shed as an integral community facility.

“The Shed plays a valuable role in the community by providing a space for social interaction, mental stimulation, and camaraderie,” he said.

“The City is very proud to support the Shed by providing an accessible and well-equipped facility for Shed members to create, socialise and give back to our local community.”

“The City is committed to ensuring Kalgoorlie-Boulder is an enriching and liveable place to live for residents of all ages, and the Shed provides a great atmosphere for anyone over 18 to meet and socialise with others whilst working on fantastic projects.”

The 30 Years of Sheds acknowledges the long-standing relationship between the C.Y O’Connor Men’s Shed and the City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder.

Celebrations will be held from 12pm – 4pm, Monday 4 September, and will include free woodturning demonstrations and a build-a-caddy workshop.

The C.Y O’Connor Men’s Shed is open to all members of the community aged 18 and over and is located off Rhodes Street (behind the William Grundt Memorial Library).
